The Medicine Wheel Neighborhood

at EARTHAVEN ECOVILLAGE

Has Work-Exchange Positions Available
March thru November, 2012 (2 month minimum stay)

    Medicine Wheel is a Permaculture-based collective neighborhood nestled within Earthaven’s 320 acres of forests and creeks,  We offer work-exchange opportunities to people who want to experience off-the grid living, and learn more about community and Permaculture.  Life at Medicine Wheel House provides the opportunity to live and learn with Permaculture teachers and practitioners every day.  The work is varied, and may involve gardens, orchards, natural & conventional building, rock walls, ponds, rainwater catchment, animal care (as soon as we get chickens!) – and sometimes just plain housework, or hauling trash, or chopping firewood or putting up fencing for days (so we can get chickens!).
    Our off-grid, 3-storey, mostly-finished, ten-bedroom house includes an office, big kitchen and dining areas, large social areas, and indoor showers (composting toilets and solar showers are outside).  With up to a dozen people in the main house and small cottage, we practice communication, cooperation, tolerance, and conflict resolution every day.  We also practice hugs and grins, spontaneous song and prayer, amazed gratitude, and continuously unfolding awareness.
    We’re open to work-exchangers of all ages and orientations, though we give preference to people who are considering Earthaven as a permanent home.  Some of the characteristics we’re looking for include:
    - has physical and emotional health
    - has financial resources to support at least a 2-month stay
    - generally likes, and communicates well with, people
    - has an interest in learning more about Permaculture
    - has a desire to live with a very light footprint, such as:
      * local, seasonal, mostly vegetarian diet
      * solar electricity
      * composting toilets
      * wood heat
      * no pets
    The Work Exchange (WEX) works like this:
    In exchange for a room at Medicine Wheel (MW) and use of the house, the WEXer gives:
•    15 hrs/wk of work for MW, plus 2 hrs/week for MW kitchen, plus 4 hrs/wk for Earthaven – a total of twenty-one hours per week of labor
•    $160/mo to the MW Kitchen for food (complete access to the kitchen and garden for all meals, though you may need to spend a little more for luxury items like coffee or dairy)
•    $30/mo Earthaven fees (+ $25 1st mo)
•    $15/mo roads fee, if you have a car at EH
